The man accused of toting a backpack filled with ingredients to make methamphetamine was arrested 10 days earlier for having suspected cocaine, according to Cobb County arrest warrants.

Barry Joseph Mevers Jr., 45, of Cumming, was arrested Friday after he was spotted tossing his backpack into bushes on Northwest Parkway in Marietta, police said. Investigators temporarily blocked portions of two roads and evacuated businesses until the contents of backpack were rendered safe.

“Said accused did have all necessary ingredients to manufacture methamphetamine,” Mevers’ arrest warrant states.

Mevers also had a used cracked cocaine pipe when he was arrested, according to Marietta police. He was charged with manufacturing drugs and cocaine possession and booked into the Cobb County jail, where he was being held Wednesday morning without bond.

Ten days before he was caught with the alleged portable meth lab, Mevers was arrested on a drug charge in the same area of Northwest Parkway, arrest and booking records show.

“Said accused did have in his immediate possession a used ‘crack’ cocaine pipe which contained cocaine residue,” a Feb. 4 arrest warrant states.

Mevers was charged with cocaine possession and spent about four hours in jail before posting $2,000 bond, booking records show.
