Avondale mayor Rieker resigns
One day after apologizing several times before a packed and occasionally contentious city hall for his role in submitting an annexation bill, Avondale Estates mayor Ed Rieker abruptly resigned.
The announcement was made in a brief note from Rieker released by the city late Thursday afternoon. “I have accepted a professional opportunity that will require a significant amount of my time and attention,” Rieker writes. “Therefore, I am resigning as Mayor effective today. The City of Avondale Estates and its residents are unique, charming and vibrant. It has been a privilege and honor to volunteer and serve as your Mayor.”
No other information was immediately available. The mayor gave no hints to leaving office during a brief interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after Wednesday’s public meeting. Rieker was initially elected mayor in 2007, then narrowly re-elected in Nov., 2011, edging out David Milliron 625 votes to 595.
