The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of death for rapper Juice WRLD, who died at a Chicago hospital after consuming “several unknown pills.”

Juice WRLD, whose real name is Jarad A. Higgins, died Dec. 8, 2019, after his plane landed at Midway International Airport in Chicago. Federal agents stopped his plane upon arrival to search for guns and drugs, and shortly after, the 21-year-old began convulsing and later suffered from a cardiac arrest.

He was later pronounced dead at a Chicago hospital. Members of the “Lucid Dreams” rapper’s entourage reported that Juice WRLD had taken “several unknown pills” before his death. At the time, witnesses told authorities the musician likely took several pills to hide them from police. Federal agents reportedly found 70 pounds of marijuana and several illegal guns on the private jet transporting Higgins and his team.

The examiner’s office revealed Wednesday afternoon that Higgins died as a result of oxycodone and codeine toxicity. The manner of death was accidental, according to the report.

Juice WRLD, who was named top new artist at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards in May, lived in the Chicago suburb of Homewood. His hit song "Lucid Dreams" made it to No. 9 on the Billboard charts. He had collaborated with Atlanta rapper Future on the collaboration mixtape "Wrld on Drugs."
