Authorities in Atlanta and Gwinnett County want to know what happened to two dogs, one shot and the other burned and mutilated.

The dog in Atlanta, a female, was found March 7, with multiple gunshot wounds, in a dumpster in the 500 block of Beckwith Street. Police responding to a report of shots fired found the dog, according to an incident report. Atlanta police contacted Fulton County Animal Services, which took the dog to an animal hospital. The dog’s owner could not be identified and there was no collar or tags on the wounded animal.

Animal Services transferred the dog to the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia Tuesday, where they named the canine “Catie.”

Wednesday night, Humane Friends posted on its website that permission had been granted to a neurologist at UGA to euthanize Catie.

“Our sweet Catie’s injuries are much, much worse than we originally knew,” the post said.

The dog’s spinal cord was severed, she had a piece of shrapnel lodged in her heart, and she was in extreme pain, according to the post.

The dog found in Gwinnett wandered into a CVS Pharmacy in Lilburn March 6, with a burn wound on its head and no ears. Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement officers responded to the pharmacy and took the male dog to the Gwinnett County animal shelter. Authorities say the dog is a mixed breed and about 7 years old.
