An Augusta man remains in jail after his baby was hospitalized with fractured bones.

John Scritchfield, 21, was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree, according to Richmond County Jail records. On March 18, Scritchfield took the child to a private doctor, who told him to take the child to Augusta University Medical Center due to bruising on his left leg, according to a police report obtained by the Augusta Chronicle.

The child was examined, and X-rays were taken at the medical center. Doctors found the child’s left femur and left fibula were fractured, according to the report. The medical staff reported its findings to the Division of Family and Children Services.

Doctors told DFACS the injuries were not consistent with an accident and were abuse, according to the report. The child is being cared for by maternal relatives, according to the Chronicle.
