Rain, afternoon temperatures in the 70s, subfreezing temps and a chance of a wintry mix – they’re all in the forecast for north Georgia between now and Friday.
The National Weather Service said the wintry precipitation is possible late Wednesday night into Thursday across the far northwest corner of the state, generally north of Rome and Calhoun, where forecasters said the rain could mix with or change over to light sleet or freezing rain.
Ice accumulations of up to .10 inch are possible, the Weather Service said.
In metro Atlanta, only rain is forecast for Wednesday night as temperatures should remain in the 40s.
Light drizzle that moved into the metro area before daybreak Tuesday should continue off and on through Thursday, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton.
Minton said the chance of rain is 60 percent Tuesday, diminishing slightly to 50 percent Wednesday and Thursday. There’s a chance for a “rumble of thunder” on Wednesday, she said.
After highs in the mid-50s Tuesday afternoon, temperatures on Wednesday will climb into the low 70s after morning lows in the mid-50s, Minton said.
But the balmy preview of spring will be short-lived, with highs Thursday and Friday only reaching the upper 40s, according to Minton.
By early Friday, temperatures across metro Atlanta will be back down around 30 degrees.
Atlanta’s normal high for early March is 61, the normal low 41.
