A man was shot while driving his car on a major southwest Atlanta highway Saturday afternoon, causing him to lose control and drive off the road, police said.

The victim, who was identified Monday as 23-year-old Jaquez Howard, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation suggests the man was driving west on Langford Parkway near Greenbriar Parkway when another vehicle pulled up beside him, “and an occupant of that vehicle fired several times into the victim’s vehicle,” Chafee said.

That is when Howard lost control of the vehicle and veered off the roadway. The car came to a stop in a ditch and against a fence.

Investigators said Monday they were still working to determine if the man’s injuries were caused by being shot or by the crash.

Police said they are looking for the alleged drive-by shooter.

Anyone with information about the shooting and crash is urged to contact the Crime Stoppers Atlanta anonymous tip line at 404-577-8477.
