The city of Lithonia plans to honor the Black Lives Matter movement by painting its Main Street this weekend.
Since the death of George Floyd in May and the widespread protests that followed, cities across the country have painted “Black Lives Matter” on large thoroughfares to show their support for the movement. In Atlanta, a “Black Lives Matter” mural was painted on the Beltline in large, yellow lettering in mid-June.
The Lithonia initiative was shared in a post on the city’s Facebook page. It stated the painting will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16 on Main Street in downtown Lithonia, a small city in eastern DeKalb County.
The post urged residents to wear a face mask if they attend. The city did not share any more details about what the mural will look like or how long it will remain on the street.
This city of Decatur also plans to install a “Black Lives Matter” street mural later this month, on N. McDonough Street between Trinity Place and Howard Avenue — near the downtown square and in front of Decatur High School. The city commission approved the project last week; officials plan to hire three artists to paint the three letters, with community involvement and input.
