Clayton County is hoping to boost more space for the production of films by updating zoning that will allow for soundstages, especially in empty warehouses.

Clayton Community Development Director Patrick Ejike told the County Commission during a work session on Tuesday that a film company is interested in transforming a warehouse at the Industrial Park District into a soundstage. But for that to happen, the area’s zoning would have to be switched to light and heavy industrial.

“This will allow us to use some of our empty spaces,” Ejike said. He did not name the film company that has expressed interest in the county.

The change, which could be voted on at a future meeting, would get the county into the lucrative film business, which has boomed over the last decade in metro Atlanta. Clayton’s cities already offer options in which studios may film, but not the county, Ejike said.
