Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Tuesday was named one of the 2020 “Women of the Year” by Glamour magazine.
Joining Bottoms on the list is actress Regina King, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, activist Dolores Huerta, and a group of healthcare workers at a hospital in New York City. Glamour, a magazine focusing on women’s issues and style, has released an annual slate of “Women of the Year” for the last 30 years.
In a profile written by Atlanta-born writer Tayari Jones, Bottoms discussed her family, the legal battle with Gov. Brian Kemp over coronavirus restrictions, and the recent protests against racism and police brutality in Atlanta.
On the clash with the governor, Bottoms told Jones: “I’d rather go down fighting than stand as a loser.”
She also commented on the inequities that persist in Atlanta and the “complacency” that can sometimes accompany the thinking behind the “Atlanta Way."
“This complacency that, ‘No, you don’t have all those problems in Atlanta, because this is Atlanta! Fifty percent of small businesses are minority owned. We have good jobs here,'" Bottoms said. "But the reality is that we have the largest income inequality gap in the country. There are still so many communities on the outside looking in.”
