Two metro Atlanta brothers have been charged with conspiracy to prepare and file false tax returns, which resulted in more than $1 million in refunds.

Frederick Jenkins, 42, of Atlanta, and Willie Jenkins, 44, of Fairburn, were indicted by a federal grand jury in May and arraigned today, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

The brothers owned and operated multiple locations of Global Tax Service LLC, in Georgia and Alabama, authorities said. Between 2008 and 2011, the two allegedly prepared and filled false returns for clients. The falsifications often included incorrect and made up business expenses, according to the release.

“Citizens trust that tax preparers will accurately prepare their returns,” Yates said in a prepared statement. “Tax preparers who abuse the system for their own financial gain will be investigated by the Internal Revenue Service and, where appropriate, criminally prosecuted.”

Trial dates for the brothers were not announced.
