Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run in Lawrenceville

April 27, 2015

A Gwinnett County man is facing vehicular homicide and hit-and-run charges after allegedly leaving the scene of a Sunday night accident that left a scooter driver dead.

Lawrenceville police Sgt. Chris Ralston said the wreck happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Grayson Highway and Gwinnett Drive.

A man riding a moped scooter was killed when he was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by Lawrenceville resident Tony Ray Morris. Morris drove away but was arrested a short time later, Ralston said.

The victim was identified as 55-year-old Lawrenceville resident Marcell Smith.

In addition to vehicular homicide and hit-and-run, Morris was also charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended or revoked license and failure to yield, according to Gwinnett County jail records. He is being held without bond.
