Archbishop Wilton Gregory said he’s likely to sell his new home, a mansion that cost $2.2 million to build.
There’s no set time for a sale if one occurs, said a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, which owns the brick building on Habersham Road in Buckhead. The archbishop moved into the 6,196-square-foot home earlier this year. Money for the home came from the will of Joseph Mitchell, a longtime parishioner at the Cathedral of Christ the King who left $15 million to his parish and the archdiocese. Mitchell, who died in 2011, was the nephew of “Gone With the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell.
The archbishop was unavailable for comment Wednesday, but news that he’s considering selling the Habersham Road home was enough to touch off cheers throughout the archdiocese. He’d come under a barrage of criticism from people who said the archdiocese could have spent that money more wisely.
“I think this is wonderful,” said Laura Mullins, an outspoken critic of the Gregory’s house.
Others said Gregory’s announcement indicates he’s following the example set by Pope Francis — and other American bishops — to live more simply.
