Atlanta police Major Valerie Dalton is leaving the department to become chief of police at Morehouse College.
Dalton will be the first woman to lead the police department at Morehouse, the country’s only all-male historically black college, according to a statement from Atlanta police.
She will become associate vice president for public safety and chief of police at Morehouse on Jan. 5.
Dalton joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1987, and in 2008 was promoted to the rank of major and assigned the post of commander for Zone 1, which includes the Atlanta University Center complex.
