The Alpharetta City Council Monday night cleared the way for an important street connection.

Council members approved a roughly $2.6 million contract with CMES, Inc. of Lilburn for extension of Northwinds Parkway a half-mile south towards Kimball Bridge Road, a section which will include a connection to the Gwinnett Technical College expansion into North Fulton under construction off Old Milton Parkway. The campus is expected to open for classes in January, placing additional demands on area roads.

City officials said the 4-lane extension will provide improved access for traffic from North Point Parkway trying to access Old Milton, and will allow for better dispersal of traffic as it leaves the Gwinnett Tech campus. Completion of the entire project is set for six months from when notice to proceed is given, with the contractor required to provide a drivable roadway from Old Milton to the Gwinnett Tech access point by Dec. 31.

City officials said the road will ultimately extend to Kimball Bridge, with a developer further south of the to-be-completed section responsible for finishing the final stretch.
