A man was shot outside the downtown Decatur library Monday evening when an argument escalated to gunfire, police said.

Investigators believe the victim and the suspected shooter were involved in a previous argument on Church Street before they “ran into one another” again at the DeKalb County library branch on Sycamore Street, according to Decatur police Sgt. John Bender.

“An argument ensued again and resulted in one male being shot,” Bender said in a post on the department’s Nextdoor page.

The victim was found in the rear parking deck when police arrived about 7:45 p.m., shortly before the library closed for the night. He was stable before he was taken to a hospital.

A suspect, identified by police as 20-year-old Kewuan Jones of Birmingham, Alabama, was arrested at the scene without incident, Bender said. He is being held in the DeKalb jail on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a weapon without a license. His bond has not been determined.
