The Acworth Police Department is hosting its eighth annual "Covering the Bases," an award-winning program that raises awareness and funds to support Horizon Field.

The field is a synthetic surface which allows children with physical and cognitive disabilities to play organized sports.

The Horizon League is a partnership with the Special Needs Development Group, Inc. that provides team sport opportunities to children with mental and physical disabilities between the ages of 5 and 21.

So far, the police department has raised more than $150,000 with all proceeds going to the field.

This year's 24-hour event starts at 6 p.m. Friday at the Acworth Sports Complex, 4000 South Main St., the home of Horizon Field.

The field and 42-acre complex are just south of the downtown business district near Proctor Creek.
