A newborn boy was found inside a plastic bag that was concealed under some leaves near a Union County, North Carolina, home on Wednesday afternoon.

The infant was found by local sheriff’s deputies who were responding to tips from Atrium Health Union, a hospital in Monroe, that the child was near the home.

The home is on East High 74 near Marshville.

The incident’s police report states deputies heard cries from the newborn as they were investigating. Officials said the child was still alive and taken to a local hospital.

No names have been released in connection with the case, and no further details have been released.
