A fundraiser has been launched for the family of a 3-year-old boy killed Saturday morning when a mobile home caught on fire in Bartow County.

Emergency crews responded to the home along Clark Circle near Glade Road about 11:50 a.m. after receiving a call about a fire with a child trapped inside, Bartow County fire Chief Dwayne Jamison told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

An off-duty firefighter attempted to rescue the boy from the burning home, but was unsuccessful, Jamison wrote in an email.

The body of Philip Jenkins was later recovered from the scene. Investigators determined the blaze was caused by a kerosene heater that had been filled with the wrong fuel.

“One of the occupants (of the mobile home) accidentally put gasoline instead of kerosene in the heater,” Jamison said.

Investigators said the fire was caused by a kerosene heater containing the wrong fuel.

A GoFundMe account set up by Jenkins’ aunt for the child’s funeral expenses had raised more than $8,000 as of Thursday.

“My parents’ house caught on fire and my nephew was trapped inside my mom’s room,” she wrote. “... sadly he didn’t make it, he was only 3 years old. They lost everything but we need help for the funeral costs. Anything will help.”
