A northwest Atlanta parking deck remains closed after a box truck became stuck Friday afternoon and potentially compromised the structure, officials said.
The Atlanta Fire Department said the truck damaged concrete beams at the multilevel deck located in the 1800 block of Howell Mill Road, which is near a Walmart shopping plaza and apartment complex. Footage from the scene showed concrete scattered on both sides of the truck, and it appeared the truck scraped the top of the parking deck as it was trying to exit about 3:30 p.m., Channel 2 Action News reported.
In addition to the damage, the truck leaked gasoline, Atlanta fire spokeswoman Alyssa Richardson said.
The fire department blocked off the entrance of the deck to all traffic Friday. No one was injured in the incident and no evacuation was necessary, Richardson said.
Structural engineers were called to the scene to inspect the integrity of the deck, she said. The driver was told by authorities that his truck was the only thing holding up the ceiling, Channel 2 reported.
“Our top priority is safety and the area of the parking deck impacted is currently closed as we work diligently with engineers to find a timely and safe solution to fully restore its use,” Kim Trotter, who works for the company that owns the property, said Tuesday. “We will be sure to communicate with those affected as to when the deck can be reopened.”
