A Forsyth County middle school was placed on medical lockdown for about an hour Friday afternoon after 11 students were taken to the hospital when another student brought melatonin gummies to campus, authorities said.

A spokesperson for Forsyth County Schools said authorities investigated after the children became sick at Otwell Middle School. It was later discovered that the children ate some over-the-counter gummy supplements containing 5 milligrams of melatonin that another student took to campus, authorities said.

The children were all taken to a hospital and released soon after, the district confirmed. Authorities did not say how many each student had ingested.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and said charges will be determined once the probe is over. The school district did not say if any disciplinary action will be taken.

In 2019, 28 Sandtown Middle School students were sent to hospitals after getting sick from Valentine’s Day treats, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Several food samples were sent to the GBI for testing and revealed the presence of THC, the agency said at the time.

The investigation revealed that students took the drug-laced edibles to school. A Fulton County school police incident report indicated that some of the students had eaten Rice Krispy treats and heart-shaped lollipops.
