Q: On our way through downtown Atlanta we passed by the Atlanta Selfie Museum. It was not open at the time, but am curious. Will you tell me about this museum?
A: The Atlanta Selfie Museum opened in November and has been described as an “Instagram museum” with 30 individually designed installations, photo zones, backdrops and murals.
About three years in, co-founder and co-owner Andrew Butenko took on a venture. He describes it as basically a photo studio with lighting.
“It is easy to take quality pictures. It’s very family oriented and a very fun, cool experience,” he said.
“We have true artists that come in from all over the United States and craft their vision,” Butenko said. “It’s all very different and unique. So everything is created to the point of it being about you. We provide the correct lighting and a nice variety of backgrounds to complement you and your family.”
From simple to extreme, the museum’s themed open walls, corner stations and rooms encompass a vast array offering a good mix of 2D dimensional expression and 3D that include rooms with a bathtub with balls, a washing machine and a banana room with a swing in it.
Butenko said the upside-down and mirror rooms are very popular. The infinity room designed with mirrored walls, ceiling and a glossy floor with changeable color circle lights gives the appearance that you are in a place with no beginning or end, he noted.
So what’s the favorite room for kids or young families?
“I have a picture of my family in the flower room,” the father said. “If you take the photo from the right angle it looks super cool.”
The employees assist on how to use a particular installation or give ideas if needed, but do not take pictures for you.
The ASM is open 7 days a week with varying hours and is following COVID protocol. Free for up to 3 years, $22 for ages 4-12 and adults range from $27 to $32 depending on the day of the week.
Address: 116 Centennial Olympic Park Drive, S.W., Atlanta (404-566-5778).
