Hampton will have a new mayor in 2022. Two women with City Council experience qualified for the race when Steve Hutchison decided not to run for a third term, and Ann Tarpley prevailed in a close race against Stephanie Bodie, 660 to 616. Tarpley failed in a bid for the council in 2013, won a seat in 2015 and lost a re-election bid in 2019. Also on the current ballot in Hampton was a race for three at-large council seats, one of which had been held by Bodie. The top three finishers were Devlin Cleveland, Sheila Barlow and incumbent Willie Turner. The other incumbent, Errol Mitchell, finished fourth in the eight-person field.
