After postponing the city’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions, Norcross is throwing the city a birthday bash 4-10 p.m., Oct. 23 at Lillian Webb Park. CDC guidelines will be followed.
“On Saturday, October 23rd, we will celebrate 150 years +1 as one of the region’s favorite cities. For me – for us all – it is arguably the most important day on the city’s calendar this year: a day when we remember the founding of our city and the impact we’ve had as Gwinnett’s second oldest city,” said Norcross Mayor Craig Newton. “We are indebted to the men and women who had the vision that led to the creation of the City of Norcross back in 1870, and all who have contributed to the leadership and vision of our city since.”
The celebration will take place at Lillian Webb Park, the site of the city’s former baseball field, where the Norcross Nuggets would play on Saturday afternoons. According to the city, “Norcross produced more professional baseball players per capita than any other town in the nation—four major leaguers came out of a town with a population of perhaps 1,000.”
In addition to the fun, the city will place a focus on childhood cancer awareness by collecting donations of children’s pajamas (ages 3 mo. to 18 yr.), travel-sized personal care products and financial contributions. Collection bins will be stationed throughout Lillian Webb Park. Questions and additional information about this drive: Sonia Lopez at asamils@yahoo.com or 404-587-4307.
