Drivers frustrated with congestion at Peachtree City’s primary intersection must wait at least another year for any relief. The City Council heard an update about the pending reconfiguration at Ga. 74/54 at its Sept. 16 meeting from Planning & Development Director Robin Cailloux. Although three other traffic flow improvement projects stemming from a 2014 study have been completed and a fourth will begin in November, the major project to install “displaced left turn” lanes is not scheduled to start until October 2022.

The new traffic lanes are designed primarily to keep traffic moving more efficiently from northbound Ga. 74 onto westbound Ga. 54, where heavy backups have occurred for years. Cailloux said the engineering has been completed but the right-of-way acquisition by the Georgia Department of Transportation is still in progress. Further updates and a video showing how the new traffic lanes will work can be found at www.dot.ga.gov/DS/Alternative/DLT.
