At its first regular meeting of 2021 on Thursday, the Fayetteville City Council voted 5-0 to select Darryl Langford as its mayor pro-tem for this year. He replaces Scott Stacy, who served in that role last year. The city charter notes that the mayor pro-tem “shall perform the duties of the Mayor during his absence from the City, his disability, or until the replacement of the Mayor by a special election, upon the vacancy of the office of Mayor.” Chosen annually, the mayor pro-tem is also counted as part of any quorum of council members and can cast the majority vote in case of a tie.

Langford, who was nominated for mayor pro-tem by Rich Hoffman, represents Post 2 on the council and was elected to the seat in 2019 after defeating former councilman Harlan Shirley.
