Middle and high school band students in Fayette County will soon get some new instruments. The school system plans to replace aging instruments as well as buy additional ones that are either too large or expensive for students to purchase or that can be used by multiple students. The Board of Education unanimously approved the allocation of $600,000 of ESPLOST II funds at its Nov. 29 meeting.
The new instruments will be used in the concert, symphonic, jazz and marching bands. Distribution of the funds will be led by Fine Arts Coordinator Tammy Strickland in consultation with individual school music directors after current inventories are reviewed and prioritized. Strickland said the purchases will follow the regular county bidding process.
The last system-wide band instrument refresh was done in 2019, using ESPLOST I funds. Each high school got $6,000 and each middle school received $4,000.
