Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan presented Citizen Commendations to Tyree Thorne and Kirk Malcolm during a Dunwoody City Council meeting recently.

They were recognized as heroes for helping residents after an explosion at the Arrive Perimeter apartments, according to a city statement.

The commendations include the following narrative: “On Sept. 12, 2021, following a catastrophic apartment building explosion, you placed your own life in harm’s way by assisting multiple residents out of the building and directing incoming first responders toward the affected units. It is abundantly fitting and proper that gratitude is expressed for your heroic actions on this day. You are an inspiring example of true selflessness and compassion for others.”

Video of the presentation can be found using this link at the 18:45 mark on the city of Dunwoody’s channel on YouTube, with reaction to the commendations by using this link.

Malcolm said, “It was good to just help somebody else. It’s always going to come back to you.”

Thorne added, “I’m just glad God put it in me to do this and help everybody.”

Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch recognized the men for their bravery in running toward danger.

“I know I speak on behalf of our entire city when we say thank you so much. We’re so glad you took it upon yourselves to go way above and beyond what most people would do,” Deutsch said.
