Chamblee volunteers clear 1.4 tons of debris

During the recent Rivers Alive cleanup, more than 60 volunteers cleared 1.4 tons of debris in Chamblee.

Trash bags, masks and gloves were provided to the volunteers in mid-October at Nancy Creek.

The most common items in the waterway were plastic bottles, metal cans, bags and food wrappers - all of which can be recycled.

More than half of the solid waste going to the Seminole Road Landfill is residential waste that could have been recycled, according to the DeKalb County Sanitation Division.

This subscription-based service is offered to DeKalb residents at no additional cost beyond the annual sanitation service fee.

To date, more than 60% of DeKalb residential customers are subscribed to the program.
