The city of Avondale Estates has put plans in place to celebrate Hispanic heritage. The Welcoming Avondale Committee volunteers will celebrate Welcoming Week 2021 by bringing Placita Latina events to the city along with support from Avondale Estates Downtown Development Authority, according to a press release.

Welcoming Week 2021 is an initiative of Welcoming America, nonprofit leading a movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by ensuring everyone belongs, including immigrants. Its network of hosts around the world strive to make their communities a more welcoming place for all.

Placita Latina is a group presenting mini-events highlighting Hispanic/Latinx performance, food, and culture. The Hispanic/Latinx Decatur and Avondale Estates residents came together to propose a colorful, cultural, and historical series of events to be held between the two cities during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2021).

The first of four “mini-events” in both Avondale and Decatur will include “La Placita” Latin American “Coffee Tasting” and Outdoor Performance + DJ. The event takes place 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16 in the parking lot of Banjo Coffee. Family-friendly performances feature traditional Mexican dance in the Huasteco style by Ballet Danceando. Booths with Hispanic artisans and makers selling their wares will also be available. Later in the evening, there will also be an “After Party,” featuring DJ Fernando F from 7 to 10 p.m. at the “Beer Growler” in the same location.
