Residents and visitors to Powder Springs soon will be welcomed to the city by a new mural currently being painted by an artist who has designed similar works in nearly three dozen Georgia cities.
The public is invited to the 2 p.m. Nov. 19 ribbon cutting for John W. Christian’s 50th mural, which he is painting on a wall outside Sweet Southern Coffee and Dessert at 4460 Marietta St.
Mayor Al Thurman and the Powder Springs City Council are expected to attend the event, along with other city officials and community members.
Christian is the originator of the Georgia Mural Trail, which he formed in late 2014 under the Go Georgia Arts statewide arts organization with the goal of painting 50 murals in smaller cities under 10,000 people and cities under 50,000 people, according to a city statement.
He most recently completed murals in College Park, Cedartown and Stockbridge, according to his Georgia Mural Trail Facebook page at facebook.com/GeorgiaMuralTrail.
Powder Springs is his 35th city, with its mural to be his 50th completed work.
Christian said he expects to have works completed in three more cities by Jan. 1.
The Hapeville-based artist’s Powder Springs mural represents a “homecoming” for him since Christian owned his first business in downtown Powder Springs 32 years ago.
Powder Springs city officials contracted with him earlier this year to paint the mural.
The completed mural will be in the heart of Powder Springs’ downtown near Thurman Springs Park and the Hardy Family Automotive Amphitheater, which have become the epicenter of most city events since opening in the fall of 2020.
