Austell city officials will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the city’s Veterans Memorial Park, 2651 Veterans Memorial Highway.

On Nov. 1, the Austell City Council voted to extend a ban on charitable solicitations by 30 days to complete the amendments and allow a complete review by City Attorney Scott Kimbrough.
The Council also voted in favor of Mayor Ollie Clemons’ proposal to give city employees the entire day off for Good Friday, beginning next year.
Previously, city offices would close at 3 p.m. on Good Friday for the Easter holiday.
For this year, the city will give $89,100 in interest from the city’s $5 million Norfolk Southern railroad settlement fund to help community members in need.
The fund was established when the Austell intermodal facility was constructed at U.S. 278 and 6000 Dr. Luke Glenn Garrett, Jr. Memorial Highway.
Annual funding from this interest is recommended to the City Council by the Austell Area Community Improvement Commission (AACIC).
The following expenditures will be made during this Thanksgiving and Christmas:
- Austell Elementary - $2,500
- Christmas gift for 10 Austell families - $3,000
- Christmas gift for seven Austell families - $2,100
- Funding for 21 churches - $21,000
- Funding for six Austell schools at $3,000 each - $18,000
- Funding for six schools - $6,000
- Garrett truancy - $2,500
- Gifts - $400
- Humphries Hill Cemetery - $4,000
- Turkey giveaway - $10,000
- Scholarships - $1,000
- Rosehill Cemetery - $18,600
