A proposal by a Cherokee High School fine arts instructor, depicting the history and diversity of Cherokee County, has been accepted by Canton for a 540-foot-long mural to be painted on a retaining wall along Railroad Street.

Canton and the Downtown Canton Main Street Public Art Steering Committee issued a call for mural proposals in early 2020. They selected Shanna Coulter’s design for, as the artist described it, “a parade of ‘legs through history marching toward the present moment.”

The mural will span the area’s history, using historic photos for reference. “As the timeline of Cherokee County reaches the 2000s, we would like to recruit living representatives to photograph for the final decades of the mural,” Coulter said.

She and her fellow artists and teachers will start working on the mural this month, weather permitting, and complete it by June. Information: https://bit.ly/35aPnmj
