Amid the coronavirus outbreak, residents in metro Atlanta have spread uplifting and supporting messages in a low-tech, and socially distanced, way: sidewalk chalk.

From professional artists to amateurs, the messages have been a way to connect communities.

Now, the city of Smyrna is inviting residents to participate in a chalk contest from home. On Saturday, residents can participate in the challenge by decorating their driveways with chalk art.

The Support Smyrna Chalk Art Contest will take place on June 6. The Theme of the contest is: What makes me happy. Participants are encouraged to draw their family members, sunsets, the beach — whatever makes you happy.

If you want to participate:

  • Register online with a $10 donation to Support Symrna.
  • Then, a team member will email a participant number with details of the project. Registration information will close noon on June 5.
  • Participants will have from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. to complete artwork. Then, upload a photo of the artwork for judging.
  • Judges will review the entries of each photo and select first, second and third place winners to receive a gift card to local businesses.
