Spring is a time when we clear out the clutter. Sometimes cleaning up helps us discover what we really need. If you find yourself shopping this month, you can save big on a few categories.

Post-Valentine's Day sales offer a good opportunity to save on items like chocolates and jewelry. The experts at DealNews suggest checking chocolate shops and the gift section of department stores for deals. Godiva, for example, is offering discounts of 40 percent on certain items.

The deal watchers at Offers.com say you can get deals on jewelry at department stores and jewelry stores desperate to move remaining Valentine's Day stock. They may have deals of up to 85 percent off retail on some jewelry items.

Also take a look at perfume, say CreditDonkey's forecasters. Stores will be clearing out old products to make room for new fragrance releases and offering deals you generally may not see in this category.

The one Valentine’s Day leftover to skip is lingerie, which will have much better discounts in June.

March is a good time to invest in outerwear such as heavy coats and fleece, which should be marked down to about 70 percent off, according to Offers.com, but hold off on buying spring apparel. Luggage is another hot category this month, say experts, thanks to the winter travel slump.

Though it’s slow season for TV deals, DealNews experts say you can find deals on brand-name 42-inch LCDs in the range of $300. Go up to a 55-inch and you’ll want to consider off-brands for which the best prices have fluctuated between $250 and $443.

Laptop shoppers should look for deals on year-old Haswell-based machines. A 15-inch with an average price of $375 is a good deal. In other gadget news, the Mobile World Congress takes place in March. New cellphone models will make a debut, but waiting just a few months could bring up to 50 percent in discounts, according to DealNews.

Finally, although you may be in a spring state of mind, don’t drop dollars on patio furniture. Retailers want you to buy these outdoorsy items now, but waiting until late summer will yield a better deal.
