AmericasMart — downtown’s massive event space and showroom — is slated to receive a face lift.

In an announcement earlier this week, Chicago-based real estate company JLL said it has been selected to lead renovation efforts at AmericasMart and shared renderings for the project.

According to the announcement, restorations of “building 1,” which originally opened in 1961, will begin with a series of interior changes, including an improved lobby, upgrades to the flooring and lighting and the addition of a second floor amenity space.

“Our team is passionate about bringing new life and economic value to Atlanta’s treasured properties, and we’re honored to have the opportunity to restore one of Downtown’s most historic buildings,” senior project manager Carson Mathis said in a statement.

Exterior renovations will include digital signage with street-facing displays along Peachtree. It fits with downtown's overall efforts to establish the Atlanta Arts & Entertainment District, featuring illuminated signs. Such efforts have already popped up at Peachtree Center and the 101 Marietta building.

The exterior plans also call for upgraded column finishes, replacing the existing concrete panels with glass storefronts and a new Peachtree Street entrance.

The AmericasMart complex, which spans three buildings and more than 7 million square feet, was designed in the 1950s by famed Atlanta architect John Portman.

The convention space draws high volumes of foot traffic every year to the housing and design markets hosted there. The renovations are expected to take place throughout 2020 and be completed by the 2021 winter market, according to the press release.

“AmericasMart already attracts millions of visitors to the city each year, and we’re confident this restoration project will allow (International Market Centers) to build upon its legacy as Atlanta’s hub for commerce and connectivity,” Mathis said in the statement.
