Dog returns to family after disappearing nearly two years ago

Flashback to October 2012: the Braun family was camping in Placer County, California, when their dog ran off, possibly spooked by a gunshot, KCRA reported.

The family searched, calling for Murphy, but after two days, gave up hope that they'd find their friend.

KCRA reported the family would make the return trip to the camping area to lure Murphy home, but it didn't work over the years.

But earlier this month, according to the Record-Courier, a call came from people who saw a dog matching Murphy's description.

The Brauns tried their luck but didn't find Murphy, so they decided to leave the dog's blanket and family clothing at the campground, hoping she'd respond.  And after a week, she did, the Record-Courier reported.

The family tried to confirm with DNA testing that the dog they believed to be their beloved pet was truly Murphy, News10 reported, but the sample they had provided wasn't large enough.

Luckily, a veterinarian remembered a distinctive scar on her leg, and lo and behold, after shaving the spot, the family noticed the same scar, proving the dog was indeed Murphy.

Erin Braun said that she was sure the dog was her's because it showed familiarity with her family immediately, but shied away from unfamiliar people News 10 reported.

Murphy is now home.  She's thin, but is eating and gaining strength News 10 reported.
