Dr. Robert Hamilton has posted a YouTube video showing his technique for calming a crying baby, and it looks like magic.
Dr. Hamilton recommends his technique for infants up to two or three months of age; the baby becomes too heavy after that to use his method.
In the video, the pediatrician demonstrates four steps:
1) Fold the baby’s arms across her chest, one at a time.
2) Secure the baby’s arms with your non-dominant hand after they are folded.
3) Gently grab the diaper area with the dominant hand.b
4) At 45 degree angle, gently rock the baby up and down; you can gently shake the baby’s bottom, too.
If the baby does not quiet down, Dr. Hamilton asks two questions:
1) Is the child ill?
2) Is the child hungry?
