We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Now, metro Atlanta seniors may include it in their meal delivery plan.

Meals on Wheels Atlanta has added a periodic breakfast option for its elderly clients.

“It’s been really popular, ” said Executive Director Jeffrey M. Smythe. “We were surprised when we tested it, adding it to a meal every week or every other week.” He said the initiative began about a month ago.

The meals, which have been approved by a dietitian, usually include eggs, a meat, fruit, a potato or other vegetable.

“We want to make sure our seniors are getting the calories and the right nutrition,” he said. “Our clients are eating every bite.”

Meals on Wheels Atlanta serves about 600 seniors daily through it meals program. Overall, including a home improvement program and wellness support, Meals on Wheels Atlanta serves about 2,500 seniors annually.

Smythe said the nonprofit has a waiting list of about 200.

Meals on Wheels Atlanta was created as Senior Citizen Services in 1965 after a community assessment determined that Atlanta lacked sufficient resources or infrastructure to meet the existing and growing needs of elderly citizens. It began its meal delivery program in 1970.

The service area includes Cobb, Fulton and parts of DeKalb counties.
