Lawrenceville artist Mac Stewart will be featured in his first solo museum exhibit, "Midnight Garden" at Piedmont College.

The exhibit, featuring paintings and sculptures, opens May 20 at the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art on the campus of Piedmont College, 567 Georgia St., in Demorest. The show will be on view through Aug. 26.

The self-taught Stewart, 21, is likely the youngest artist to have his work purchased by the High Museum of Art for its permanent collection.

Is he hyped for his first solo show? “Totally,” he said. “It’s been a quite a process. I’ve been preparing for this for a really long time. I’m really excited to see how people respond to the work. It’s time to get it out there to the world.”

Stewart’s work is captured in bold patterns and designs reminiscent of early modernist design,” said Daniel White, museum director.

Usually the artists showing there are mid-career or long established. “One of the things about Mac is that he is such a young talent, I felt it would be a great opportunity to bring him in because he’s closer to the age of our students. With Mac’s level of skill and maturity, I feel comfortable that he can pull it off.”

Not long ago, Stewart collaborated with the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre in which he designed the set for artistic director Wade Walthall’s world premiere, “Pictures.”

He has worked on projects with Cleon Peterson, Shepard Fairey and Michael Lin. His paintings are also in New York, California and European private collections.

Admission is free.
