This spring, Oakland Cemetery will once again light up at night, during an after-dark arts display known as Illumine.
The event invites attendees to wander through the grounds and see “all-new artistic installations set against the inspiring backdrop of Atlanta’s skyline.”
This year's event is specifically focused on the cemetery's African American Burial Grounds, which have been recently restored.
“Through light, shadow, sound, and texture, Illumine will share the stories of Black Atlantans who built and shaped the city while persisting against unequal treatment and legalized discrimination,” a press release for the event reads.
Illumine will be held multiple nights in late April and early May and will feature “innovatively lit headstones, mausoleums, flowers, trees, and buildings,” which will highlight Oakland’s spring gardens and the recent renovation efforts.
“Illumine presents a spectacular opportunity to highlight the ways in which Oakland reflects the history of Atlanta, set within the splendor of the spring gardens,” Mary Fernandez, manager of special events and volunteers at Historic Oakland Foundation said in a release. “This year’s course is longer, with new areas to explore and to be brought to life by some of Atlanta’s brightest artists.”
Gates will open for the event — which will also feature cocktails, live music and a pop-up shop — each night at 7:30 p.m., but guests can enter until 10 p.m. and are encouraged to stay past dark.
The dozens of artistic displays will include lanterns, light boxes and archival images and projected films, according to Oakland.
Each night of the event has a limited number of tickets available, which range from $15-$115, in order to offer the best experience possible.
Attendees will also get discounts at nearby restaurants. Ticket holders can get 10% off at Tin Lizzy’s in Grant Park and 20% off at Firepit Pizza.
The event will be held rain or shine.
