This Peachtree Hills Craftsman home shows how a renovation can add beautiful functionality.

Aaron and Amanda Clark bought their 1928 Craftsman cottage in Peachtree Hills in 2013. The house is painted Sherwin-Williams Grays Harbor with Sherwin-Williams Moderate White trim and features a Craftsman-style mahogany front door with an espresso and Jacobean stain.

Chunky dentil molding, original to the 1928 cottage, crowns the ceiling and provides a frame for the espresso-stained Craftsman-style front door and living room windows.

Before the Clarks bought their home, the mudroom area was a side porch that the previous owner had enclosed and used as the master closet. Working with DBD Renovations & Homes, they added a new doorway to the outside and opened the space to the living room, adding built-ins for shoes, briefcases and coats, as well as a comfortable sitting area.

The new mudroom, added by DBD Renovations & Homes, even gave Amanda Clark space for a reading nook.

The brick fireplace in the living room was painted in semi-gloss Sherwin-Williams Dovetail gray.

By the living room fireplace, Aaron and Amanda Clark display one of several wooden folk art signs they have collected. Made by Brunswick artist known as Miss Kay, the artwork features encouraging quotes.

Throughout the renovated Craftsman cottage in Atlanta’s Peachtree Hills neighborhood, Amanda and Aaron fitted the doors with vintage bronze glass knobs from First Watch.

In the living room hangs a painting by Atlanta artist Maria-Louise Coil. Amanda fell in love with the collage of Atlanta landmarks when she saw it at the Inman Park Festival a few years ago. Then her husband surprised her with the painting for their anniversary.

A natural fiber rug, woven baskets, live plants and botanical prints offer organic texture and natural color against the sky-blue background of the home office walls.

Amanda and Aaron added two small additions to their cottage when they bought it in 2013. In one of their additions, they expanded the existing sunroom to create a light-filled third bedroom, which they use as a home office.

Dark-stained hardwood flooring contrasts with the pale blue-green walls in the hallway and a matte gray dot porcelain basketweave tile floor in the adjacent guest bath. A simple cream-colored demilune accent table provides balance for the artwork with a strong sense of movement hanging above.

“The majority of our furniture are pieces that I have collected over the years,” said Amanda, who also refinishes many of the pieces herself. The dining room is filled with her collection, from the table and buffet she found in her hometown of Rome, Ga., to the chairs she bought off Nextdoor and repainted and reupholstered.

Before renovations, Aaron and Amanda’s kitchen appliances were “on their last leg” and storage space was minimal. The couple added new shaker cupboards and a huge central island by Andrei Kozlowski with ROC Cabinetry, ornamental white granite countertops and stainless appliances from Ferguson. For interest, they added a feature window, a pearly white tile backsplash with a crackled finish and a decorative mosaic inset of white marble.

The small Craftsman cottage won the hearts of Amanda and Aaron, but they knew it would need to be more functional if they were to stay in it for another 10 years. The Clarks worked with architect Robert Kauffman, contractor Thomas Drew with DBD Renovations & Homes and interior designer Cristina Desmelik on an approximately $160,000 renovation project which added functionality, like the home office.

Their original master bedroom was tiny, said Amanda Clark. She and Aaron took away a portion of a deck in the back to extend the house and create a master suite. A wall of windows allows natural light to flood in, and Benjamin Moore Guilford Green walls mirror the greenery outside.

Placed high on the walls, decorative octagonal windows grace either side of the bed in the master bedroom, adding light and architectural interest.

Two large Kohler mirrored medicine cabinets reflect the Eramosa white porcelain tile shower walls and matte enamel Sherwin-Williams Worldly Gray walls in the master bathroom. Antique nickel two-light bath bars from the Archives collection at Progressive Lighting illuminate the space with a vintage vibe.

A gray-and-white marble mosaic is the focal point of the glass-enclosed double shower with a gray pebble floor in the master bathroom. A 72-inch Everett double vanity, from Signature Hardware, with semi-recessed sinks is topped with white Carrara marble.

Amanda wanted her small Craftsman to feel light and open. She chose pale shades of blue and green to achieve that open feel in the guest room, but brought in touches of red and yellow for added depth and interest.

French country chic design permeates the home. In the guest bedroom, floral bedding featuring blue and yellow tones complements the pale Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt walls while artwork above the bed punctuates the peaceful room with bright pops of color.

In 2013, Amanda and Aaron Clark bought the 1,780-square-foot three-bedroom, two-bath house in Peachtree Hills that they share with their two dogs, an English mastiff named Charlie and a Yorkie named Macy. Aaron is regional director for Paylocity; Amanda is a physician assistant with Digestive Healthcare of Georgia.
