This midcentury modern shows off beautiful Craftsman Style in Candler Park.

Kirk and Karen Marchisen purchased their Candler Park home in 1986 and have updated and renovated the 1920s bungalow since then. The now two-story home is 2,600 square feet with three bedrooms and three and a half baths.

The partially covered back patio serves as an extension of the kitchen when weather is nice. Kirk, an architect, added the retaining wall with built-in concrete steps, and the patio gives Karen ample space for container gardening.

An 8-seat dining room table from Domus ringed with leather Folio chairs from Crate & Barrel is the centerpiece of the dining room. The room is open on both ends to the kitchen and to the family room. A handblown Logico lamp by Artemide provides soft, diffused light.

Art by sixth-grader Halle Marchisen is displayed in the dining room of her home. The colorful art gives the space a touch of whimsey and ties in with the colors of other wall decor and the rug in the nearby kitchen.

The spiral staircase is one of Kirk’s favorite architectural elements in his renovated bungalow. The kitchen, which has an island, opens to a fireside.

Custom cabinets from And How! Furniture in Tucker and appliances from KitchenAid give the Candler Park kitchen its modern vibe, while green walls echo Karen’s love of decorating with live plants.

Karen picks sprigs and seasonal flowers for her array of colorful glass bottles and vases in her kitchen.

“The island is the center of all activity,” said Kirk. The quartz countertop island is the pivot point for the flowing U-shaped living space that he designed for the lower level. The chrome and walnut veneer stools are from Crate & Barrel.

Homeowner Kirk Marchisen says he likes the way his living room integrates mid-century modern pieces, such as a black Breuer Wassily chair with a metal frame, side-by-side Barcelona chairs and Noguchi coffee table, with Craftsman-style architectural elements such as molding and the original fireplace.

Touches of color in the rug from Wayfair are visible through the Noguchi coffee table in the living room. The glass tabletop and wood create a sculptural centerpiece for the room. “It’s nice to have a combination of a bungalow Craftsman-esque house with modern furniture in it,” said Kirk. “All the color of some of the pillows and rugs help to bring it all together.”

Leather Barcelona chairs placed side by side create stylish midcentury modern seating. An orchid on the Noguchi coffee table shows Karen’s love of plants.

The homeowners enjoy decorating with midcentury modern furniture and artwork by friends and family. A framed photograph by Judy Kuniansky hangs over the original fireplace.

A sectional from Room & Board creates a relaxing nook in the lower level living space. The rounded marble top table from West Elm adds texture while keeping the lines of the space soft.

A red architectural print from a trip to Venice fits with Kirk’s profession as an architect. On the other side of the room, a framed print from Queenie’s Consignment in Decatur brings the color of the throw blankets and pillows up to eye level.

Kirk had travertine style tile on hand when he designed the bathrooms, so his master bathroom got a classic, natural stone finish.

Vaulted ceilings paneled with 1-by-4-inch slats and French doors that open onto a private balcony give Kirk and Karen’s bedroom a cozy and airy ambience. Bright bedding from West Elm tops the wood Calvin bed from Room & Board.

French doors lead to a charming private, partially screened balcony. The small round window was an effort to bring more natural light into the room when Kirk added the second floor in 2003.

A whimsical face mirror looks back at visitors to Karen and Kirk Marchisen’s Atlanta home. The mirror came from an art festival. The sink and bathroom fixtures are by Kohler.

A custom bookshelf built by John Howe adds storage and a display area in the stairwell.

The guest room is colorful and artful, decorated with paintings by Leo Gallardy, Karen’s father. The warm reds and oranges are echoed in the artwork and throw pillows from West Elm.
