Freedom Riders 50 Years Later: The Reason

In the 1960s, African Americans were hungry for a change from unequal treatment in every aspect of society. They were joined by whites who believed in their cause enough to die for it.
Though segregation had been outlawed by the spring of 1961, black bus passengers were still expected to sit in the back.
The Congress of Racial Equality sent teams of black and white Riders on buses to challenge the norm.
But it wasn’t just about riding buses.
