“I remember the kids that came in on the day of our parade and they didn’t have a Halloween costume,” Ferderbar said. “It was heartbreaking to see that they couldn’t fit in.”

From that day, she decided that she would try to make sure every child would have a costume to be included in the festivities.

Ferderbar has been gathering costumes since September, all to stock a Halloween costume “store” that will be available for kids to shop from.

For the students, “shopping” means a simple exchange. They can shop if they donate a nonperishable food item to the North Hills Community Food Bank.

This isn’t Ferderbar’s first time doing this. Last year, she gave away nearly 90 costumes and gathered eight boxes of nonperishable food items to donate to the food bank.

Due to the popularity of the endeavor, Ferderbar has been able to begin the process for a second time.

“It’s hard to describe in words,” Ferderbar said. “When the kids come in and they pick out their costumes, it’s totally priceless to see their faces.”
