Atlanta Hawks’ great Dominique Wilkins will serve as the grand marshal of the 7th annual Winship Cancer Institute’s “Win the Fight 5K” in October.
Funds stay in Georgia to benefit cancer research at Winship.
“All of us know someone with cancer,” said Wilkins, a NBA All-Star Hall of Fame inductee, in a statement about the event. Wilkins is the vice president of of basketball operations and a special adviser to the CEO of the Hawks.

More than 3,000 people are expected to walk or run in the fundraiser, which will be held Oct. 14 at Emory University.
This year, the race, which is a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race will have a new location at the Emory University Quad on Dowman Drive and wind through Druid Hills.
In 2016, the event raised more than $930,000 - a record amount. This year’s goal is $1 million.
This particular fundraiser is unique because it allows participants to direct their tax-deductible donations to benefit 18 different cancer research projects within the institute. For instance, if someone has an interest in colon cancer, they can direct the money raised to colon cancer research.
