DMX’s condition was the source of speculation in the days leading to his death, with some outlets erroneously reporting his passing the night of April 8. Earlier in the week, the rapper underwent brain functionality tests to determine any indication of activity, but results were bleak.

DMX, a native of Mount Vernon, New York, was the father of 15 children, the youngest born in 2016.

He struggled with drug addiction throughout his career and compiled a lengthy arrest list on charges ranging from weapons and drug possessions to animal cruelty to driving under suspension to tax fraud. But in the late 1990s and 2000s, DMX was lauded a game-changer in the rap industry with gruff hits including “Get At Me Dog” and “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem.” He also dabbled in acting, landing roles in “Belly,” “Romeo Must Die,” “Exit Wounds” and “Never Die Alone.”

Last month, it was announced that DMX would star in “I Want It All,” an Atlanta-filmed movie with Rick Ross and Nas.

His eight-album career was reignited in 2019 when he signed a new recording contract with Def Jam; he was reportedly working on his first album since 2015 last summer with Swizz Beatz.

In September 2019, DMX performed one of his last public concerts with a spirited set at One Musicfest at Centennial Olympic Park. Following his performance, he strode around the trailers set up backstage and amiably chatted with journalists.

Following official news of DMX’s death, many celebrities posted condolence messages on social media:
