Actor and comedian Ken Jeong is a funny guy, but he got serious after last week’s deadly shooting spree in metro Atlanta that killed eight people — most of them Asian women.
In a virtual appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the “Masked Singer” panelist took a few minutes to address the mass killings and express dismay some people don’t consider them to be hate crimes.
“With regards to the situation in Atlanta and the shootings in Atlanta, my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to all affected,” he said, adding: “Enough is enough. We’re just fed up.”
“There’s debate whether this crime was racially motivated,” Jeong continued. “Asian American women are two times as likely to be assaulted in America. This was clearly racially motivated. This was clearly a hate crime.”
Jeong has donated $10,000 to each of five GoFundMe accounts set up for the victims’ families, even sharing some of the information on his Twitter account, which has nearly a million followers.
The shooting victims were identified as Xiaojie Tan, 49, Daoyou Feng, 44, Delaina Ashley Yaun, 33, and Paul Andre Michels, 54, all shot and killed at a spa in Cherokee County; and Yong Ae Yue, 63, Soon Chung Park, 74, Suncha Kim, 69, and Hyun Jung Grant, 51, who were shot later at two Atlanta spas.
Jeong, whose parents came to the United States from South Korea, said that as a former doctor and the husband of someone who still practices medicine, he knows how to stop the coronavirus: masks, vaccinations, common sense and “don’t be an (expletive).”
“But as a human, I don’t know how to solve racism,” he said.
