Animal Adventure Park has announced the name of April the giraffe’s long-awaited calf.

April’s calf has been named “Tajiri” after an online voting contest that ended April 30. Voters decided that a zookeeper, identified as Alyssa, would ultimately decide the name.

“‘Tajiri’ is a Swahili name for both ‘hope’ and ‘confidence,’” zookeeper Alyssa announced on Facebook Live video posted on May 1.

Alyssa said the name was selected due to the hope and confidence that animal conservationists and zookeepers have in the future of the giraffe species.

According to the website AfricanLanguages.com, "tajiri" means "rich."

April the giraffe gave birth to her calf on April 15. The zoo's livestream of April's pregnancy went viral after millions of viewers tuned in.
