All of the hustle of the holidays are officially over. With the parties slowing down and the weather turning chilly, it's easy to want to stay in and curl up with Netflix. That would be a bad idea, though. This is Atlanta, and it's filled to the brim with great things to do every day. Here are the things you can't miss in January.
First day Run at Red Brick Brewing | 1:00 p.m. Jan. 1

Kick off the new year on the run. The 5K will begin and end at Red Brick Brewing. With the race starting at 1 p.m. you can hit the snooze button as many times as you want. Runners who complete the race will be rewarded with discounted tours that include samples of Red Brick beer.

If you need something a little less active than a 5K on New Year’s Day, why not a night of listening to Yacht Rock Revue cover The Beatles? Tickets are $15. Needing some hair of dog earlier in the day? They will also be serving bottomless mimosas and showing silent movies during brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Opening weekend at Dad's Garage | Dec. 31 – Jan. 2

They’re finally back. After months in their temporary digs at 7 Stages, Dad’s Garage Theatre Company is breaking in their new Old Fourth Ward digs. The crew will be joined by guests including 10-year-old comic Saffron Herndon. Be warned though, there may be a 10 year old on stage for part of the performance, but the show is not safe for kids. Tickets start at $10.
BARocker Competition at Hard Rock Café | Jan. 7

Watch and cheer on as bartenders from the Southeast region compete for a chance at glory. Hard Rock Cafes from Atlanta, Biloxi, Miss., Hollywood, Fla., Key West, Fla., Memphis, Tenn., Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, Tenn. and Orlando are all sending their best to make the best cocktails they can. The winner will secure a spot at the worldwide finals at Hard Rock Café’s annual Global Conference in Orlando. A $5 cover will be collected at the door. Cocktails will be auctioned during the event in support of The Giving Kitchen.
Monster Jam at the Georgia Dome | Jan. 9

Gather the troops, Atlanta. It’s time for Monster Jam. The Dome will be taken over by monster trucks like Grave Digger and El Toro Loco on Jan. 9. Expect head to head races, car crushing and individual trucks whipping the crowd into a frenzy with tricks. Tickets start at $10 and it’s great for kids. Just make sure to pack your earplugs.
Book of Mormon at the Fox Theatre | Jan. 12 – Jan. 24

From the creators of South Park, comes this nine-time Tony award winning Broadway show about Mormon missionaries. It is raucous and not for kids. This is only the second time coming to Atlanta, and many of last year’s shows sold out. Tickets are $35 - $135.

Party like it’s 1986! The popular Buckhead restaurant Treehouse Pub will be turning 30, and they are throwing a party. Expect complimentary bites and drink prices from 1985.
MLK Day Commemoration at Ebenezer Baptist Church | Jan. 18

On the federal holiday, a church service will be held to commemorate one of Atlanta’s most influential sons. The King Center invites the community for a non-denominational program that will focus on volunteer work.

Now in its 16th year, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival continues to explore Jewish history and culture through international film. It is not only the largest film festival in Atlanta, last year it became the largest Jewish film festival in the world. Seventy-seven films will be show at venues throughout Atlanta.
Battle of the Bands at the Georgia Dome | Jan. 30

The Honda Battle of the Bands brings college marching bands from Historic Black Colleges and Universities from around the country. Eight bands have been selected through public voting and judge selection to perform the Invitational Showcase. All eight will perform. Tickets start at $10.
